5 Troubleshooting Tips For Your Faulty Furnace
Having trouble with your furnace? You may be able to get it back in business without a call to the pros by giving these 5 troubleshooting tips a try!
Tip #1: Furnace technicians often find that the only “repair” a furnace needs is to be turned on! Look for a standard wall switch on or near the furnace—all furnaces, no matter what age or type, have one somewhere.
Tip #2: If your furnace vents out the side of the house, make sure nothing is blocking the intake or exhaust. Leaves, debris, and especially snow can build up in these areas – try clearing any blockages and re-start the boiler.
Tip #3: Unless you’ve had a fill up recently, if your furnace is acting up it may simply be out of oil. Check your oil level by taking a look at the gauge on top of the oil tank. If it’s low or empty, give your oil provider a call!
Tip #4: If your furnace has shut off, try pressing the reset button at the front of your furnace by the burner. If the furnace begins to run, you are back in business. If it starts and stops, try one more time.
Tip #5: There may be nothing wrong with your furnace at all! Your thermostat, the control centre of your heating system, may be the culprit. Make sure your thermostat switch is set to “Heat” rather than “Cool”, and set it to 5 degrees above room temperature to see if the furnace kicks in. If it does, you’re good to go!
Bonus Tip: As winter winds blow and snow piles up next to your home, it’s important to shovel it away from your furnace’s side vent. Snow build up in this area can cause your furnace to shut down when you need it most.
